The Bay Bridge has been shut down. Below are a list of alternate routes and suggestions to assist with easing your commute.
During the closure, motorists are encouraged to take public transit and/or alternate driving routes.
Take Transit or Telecommute
If at all possible, avoid driving between San Francisco and the East Bay during the repair. Caltrans recommends that you allow extra time for travel, use public transit, telecommute, or form a carpool. For those who must drive, use recommended detour routes.
Updates on transit options, including scheduling and route changes, will be posted here as they become available.
Detour routes
Avoid traffic jams.
Click here for a map of potential bottlenecks during the Bay Bridge closure. During previous closures, the worst bottlenecks were at the I-80/I-580 merge in Albany, approaching the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge in Richmond, and on U.S. 101 just south of the I-580 merge in San Rafael. EXPECT DELAYS at the I-880/Hwy 92 Interchange
due to ongoing construction activities. Caltrans plans to have alternate traffic configurations in place during the closure. Check back soon for more information.
Recommended Detour Routes
Richmond-San Rafael Bridge detour U.S. 101 north across the Golden Gate Bridge to Interstate 580 and the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Or, head head west on Interstate 580 and the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge to U.S. 101 south across the Golden Gate Bridge.
San Mateo Bridge detour U.S. 101 south or Interstate 880 south to the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge.
Dumbarton Bridge detour U.S. 101 south or Interstate 880 south to the Dumbarton Bridge.
Since the Bay Bridge will be closed to traffic, taking transit will be your only option in most cases. You can take transit from any of the region's 150+ park & ride lots. Use the interactive Park & Ride Lot map so you can find your nearest lot and plan your transit trip to or from that lot. Just click on the blue "P&R" icon and then click on the "Take Transit" "to" or "from" link to get your transit itinerary.
Find a Carpool
During the Bay Bridge closure, you might find it easier to carpool to one of the numerous Labor Day Weekend events happening in the Bay Area. Rather than meeting your friends at the ball game or concert, ask them to carpool to the event together. You could also try casual carpooling.
